What is a talent pool?
A talent pool is a database of individuals created by a recruiter during the application process. This database is usually made within an Applicant Tracking System. When a candidate applies for a job, the recruiter is able to put them into a specific and relevant talent pool by tagging candidate profiles. This could be based on experience, job title, skill sets or attributes for example. It is important to remember that the individuals that are in the talent pools, are already interested in working for your company.

How to build talent pools quickly
If you have an Applicant Tracking System or recruitment system, you have the ability to parse CVs from a variety of channels i.e. external job boards, social media sites and the company website. By parsing a CV, a candidate profile is created. This then allows the recruiter to apply tags that are relevant to the candidate. An example tag and therefore talent pool name could be ‘Project Management’, ‘PRINCE2’ or ‘I.T Technician’. Talent pools can be built quickly by implementing a recruitment system. This will ensure that all applications are coming through into one easy to manage system.
Keeping candidates happy
Candidates can be sat in talent pools for a while; weeks, months or even years. It is important to keep candidates happy. Not all of these candidates will be actively looking for jobs, some might have already been placed into a role. However, should a future role offering career progression become available, this might be of interest to them. A company should send relevant data to the individuals; this should not be spam, sending messages for the sake of sending messages. Relevant data that is interesting to the candidate should be sent. It might not even be vacancies, it could be an article of interest or an update about the company
